AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT CPU, 8 cores, 3.8 GHz, AM4 (Vermeer) - boxed with cooler
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT from the Vermeer processor family features eight CPU cores based on the "Zen 3" architecture . Compared to the previous generation, each processor core now has access to the entire L3 cache. This has significantly improved gaming performance. The Ryzen 5000 processors also offer significantly improved per-clock performance and a higher boost clock.
When paired with an AMD X570 or B550 chipset, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT supports the PCI Express 4.0 standard, which is twice as fast as PCIe 3.0. All Ryzen 5000 processors utilize the proven AM4 platform and are designed for use with compatible AMD chipsets. An update to BIOS version AGESA 1.2.0.C or later is required.
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT at a glance:

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT eight-core CPU with 4.8 GHz Precision Boost 2
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT features eight physical CPU cores , each capable of processing two threads simultaneously thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT). With the addition of eight virtual cores, the number of processing cores effectively doubles to 16. This octa-core processor operates at a high base clock speed of 3.8 GHz per core, which, thanks to Precision Boost 2, adapts precisely to the specific application scenario in real time, boosting up to 4.8 GHz within the limits of its 105-watt Thermal Design Power (TDP) .
The silicon of the CPU cores is lithographed using a 7nm FinFET manufacturing process with stacked transistors (also called 3D transistors) using Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) technology. The space gained on the processor die through the significantly reduced feature sizes allows for the integration of a total of 4 MB of Level 2 cache and a substantial 32 MB of Level 3 cache , which are particularly important for games.
The I/O chiplet in the CPU package, responsible for data lines, is manufactured using a 12-nanometer process and provides 24 PCIe lanes. Four lanes are reserved for the connection to the motherboard chipset and four for connecting NVMe SSDs. This leaves 16 lanes for communication with graphics cards, while additional PCIe lanes are provided for further storage devices, expansion cards, and peripherals, depending on the motherboard chipset.
PCI-Express 4.0 with AMD X570 or B550 chipset
When paired with an AMD X570 or B550 motherboard, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT supports the PCI Express 4.0 standard. PCIe 4.0 is backward compatible and can be used with all expansion cards from previous generations. Each PCIe 4.0 lane offers twice the data transfer rate compared to PCIe 3.0, allowing an NVMe SSD connected via four PCIe 4.0 lanes to achieve a theoretical read/write speed of up to 7.8 GB/s.
The AM4 platform also features modern external device connections such as USB 3.1 with Type-A and/or Type-C connectors and high data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbit/s. The CPU's integrated memory controller supports fast and energy-efficient DDR4 RAM in dual-channel mode with or without ECC error correction at a native clock speed of 3,200 MHz, with significantly higher clock speeds possible through overclocking.
Automatic overclocking via Precision Boost Overdrive
Overclocking is no longer a concern for most users of AMD Zen 3, as the CPU handles it automatically: The AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT is equipped with the Auto-OC feature Precision Boost Overdrive , which can increase the processor clock speed beyond the factory-set maximum boost clock limit, provided an AMD X570 or B550 motherboard is used and sufficient CPU cooling is ensured.
High-end motherboards with AMD X570 or B550 chipsets typically have additional voltage regulator modules (VRMs), allowing the Ryzen 7 processor to communicate with the X570 chipset to access any unused power reserves of the motherboard and to automatically increase its clock speeds depending on the CPU temperatures.
Unlocked CPU: Manual overclocking thanks to an unlocked multiplier
Furthermore, all AMD Ryzen CPUs are "unlocked" and have an unlocked multiplier . This makes it very easy to increase clock speeds in the BIOS or UEFI, or using software tools (e.g., AMD Ryzen Master), provided you have a suitable motherboard with an overclocking-capable chipset such as the AMD X570 or B550 and sufficient additional cooling.
Note: For PCI-Express 4.0 and Precision Boost Overdrive, an AM4 motherboard with an AMD X570 or B550 chipset and BIOS update AGESA 1.2.0.C is required.
